About the Department

The Department of Community Medicine at HBT Medical College and Dr. RN Cooper Hospital, Mumbai, was established with the vision of promoting public health and preventive medicine through education, research, and community outreach. Since its inception, the department has played a pivotal role in addressing the health needs of both urban and rural populations in and around Mumbai.

Rooted in the core principles of public health, the department was founded to bridge the gap between clinical medicine and population-based health care. Its primary purpose is to train medical students and healthcare professionals in epidemiology, biostatistics, health education, disease prevention, and health promotion strategies. It actively collaborates with local government bodies and NGOs to implement community-based health programs.

  • Plays a key role in implementing national health programs and disease surveillance through IDSP.  
  • Operates rural and urban health training centers for hands-on student training and community service.  
  • Engages in impactful research on public health issues such as non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, nutrition, and environmental health.  
  • Hosts workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns to strengthen public health literacy.

 

The Department of Community Medicine continues to be a cornerstone of preventive healthcare efforts in Mumbai, fostering a healthier community through knowledge, service, and innovation.

  • 27th January 2024 – Dr. Shweta, Junior Resident, won first prize for Essay Competition on Polio conducted by TNMC & BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai. 
  • 10th February 2024 – Dr. Ravindra Kembhavi sir, Prof and HOD, Community Medicine gave a lecture on Digital Health in Community Medicine at Scientific Congress -Disease Management and Outcome organised by The Ohio State University and Nanavati Max Hospital at Nanavati Max Hospital, Juhu.
  • 10th February 2024 – Dr. Deepika stood 1st in Poster Presentation Session at IAPSMCON 2024, Mangalore.
  • 3rd March 2024 – Dr. Mayur and Dr. Kshitij participated in Pulse Polio Program of K-West Ward, Anand Nagar Health Post.
  • 6th March 2024 – Dr. Deepika Bishnoi and Dr. Subhana Siyad presented on Recent Updates in NTEP in postgraduate seminar by Academia IAPSM eConnect.

  • 18th – 20th April 2024 – Department of Community Medicine along with Department of Paediatrics and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in collaboration with Action Against Hunger (AAH) organised a training session on Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) for Healthcare workers of Cooper Hospital.
  • 14th May 2024 onwards – series of ward mentoring activities were carried out by members of Department of Community Medicine along with Public Health Department of BMC in view of Monsoon Related Illnesses.
  • 25th May 2024 – Health Awareness Activity on Tuberculosis (TB) was conducted at UHTC Lokhandwala in in collaboration with Anand nagar health post and Kripa Academy to educate the community about tuberculosis, its types, symptoms, prevention and treatment options available to promote early detection and treatment.
  • 4th June 2024 – Mosquito breeding sites survey in HBTMC and Dr RNCH Campus
  • 15th June 2024 – Dr. Deepika Bishnoi, Junior Resident of Department of Community Medicine secured best resident award among all Departments of HBTMC and Dr. R.N.C.H.

  • 2nd January 2025 – Palliative Care OPD started in collaboration with SNEHA and Romila Palliative Care NGO.
  • March 2025 – NACO funded project on “Effect of Stigma and Discrimination Among People Living with HIV and Key Population on HIV/AIDS Control and Care Efforts in Mumbai, Maharashtra”. Status of project: Completed; Duration: October 2024 tp March 2025

4) Sections or branches of department:

  • As per the MCI guidelines the department of Community Medicine has its Urban health training center (RHTC) at Swami Samarth Nagar, Lokhandwala, Mumbai. (located at Plot CTS no. 1’/223-A& L-222-A, S.No. 4I of
  • Village Oshiwara, [K/W], Andheri west, Mumbai).The necessary administrative sanctions havebeen obtained from the Local Authority Bodies.
  • Department of Community Medicine has adopted three Primary Health Centres namely Kaman PHC, Satpati PHC, KelveMahim PHC of the Palghar District of Maharashtra. Out of these three PHCs, Kaman PHC, Ta. Vasai, District Palghar is upgraded to Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC). The State Government Resolution (GR) is taken and also available on website. Memorandum of Understanding between District Health Dept and HBTMC is done.
 

5) Services provided by department:

  • a) Managing Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) of Dr. R. N. Cooper Hospital.
  • b) General OPD, under-five clinic, Geriatric clinic, Healthy mother OPD, Adolescent girls program conducted in Urban Health Training Centre.
  • c) Health camps and health awareness programs conducted in the field practice area of UHTC.
  • d) School health camps.
