About the Department

The Department of Forensic Medicine is a vital pillar of the medical sciences, dedicated to the intersection of medicine and law. This department plays a crucial role in imparting knowledge and training to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in the field of forensic medicine, toxicology, and medico-legal practices. The department was established in 2015 with a mission to equip future medical professionals with the expertise needed to apply medical knowledge in legal contexts, contribute to the justice system, and uphold the ethical standards of the medical profession.

Postmortem CentreThe Cooper Postmortem Centre is a key facility affiliated with the Department of Forensic Medicine, for medico-legal autopsies, forensic investigation, and practical medical education. Strategically located and fully equipped, the Centre plays a dual role in both public service and academic training
Clinical Forensic Medicine / Antemortem examination roomFor examination of medicolegal cases including collection of evidence and sampling.
MuseumToxicology Section:
Equipped with basic analytical tools and models to demonstrate the detection and analysis of poisons and other toxic substances in biological samples. Students are trained in the identification of commonly encountered poisons and their medico-legal implications.
Forensic Osteology and Anthropology:
Displays and specimens of human bones, skeletal remains, and models used to teach identification, age estimation, and sex determination, aiding in forensic investigations.
Forensic Ballistics, Radiology and Photography
Various firearms, photographs of various injuries, and xrays of medicolegal cases for undergraduate academic training.
Specimens
Our museum houses an extensive collection of pathological wet specimens, which serve as invaluable resources for academic demonstration and research. These specimens, preserved in formalin or alcohol, encompass a wide array of human and animal tissues, offering a tangible glimpse into the complexities of disease and trauma.
Practical LabInteractive Learning Tools:
The lab features visual aids, forensic charts, and case-based study models to help students understand complex concepts such as wound analysis, weapon injuries, and time since death estimation.
Simulation and Documentation Training:
Students are taught how to properly document medico-legal cases, fill out autopsy reports, and handle evidence following legal protocols. Simulated case scenarios are used for training in clinical forensic medicine, such as examination of assault, sexual offences, and intoxication cases.
LibraryThe library houses a curated selection of textbooks, reference books, national and international journals, and medico-legal manuals covering all aspects of forensic medicine, toxicology, pathology, legal medicine, and criminal law.
Demo RoomTo conduct various training programmes, seminars and CME.
Research LabThe Forensic Medicine Research Lab provides a dynamic environment for conducting investigative studies in forensic science. It facilitates student and faculty research in autopsy findings, chemical analysis, and crime-related medical evidence. The lab plays a key role in enhancing medico-legal education through hands-on scientific exploration.

MD FORENSIC MEDICINE:
The postgraduate training consists of autopsy techniques, recent advances in forensic medicine and toxicology, medicolegal case discussions, journal clubs, postgraduate teaching, seminars, demonstration of laboratory procedures, rotatory postings in various departments like forensic science laboratory, pathology, radiology, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology etc.

  • Organized National Annual Conference as joint organizing secretary at Powai
  • Conducted awareness programme on drug abuse in association with Central Bureau of Narcotics “Drugs and Addiction–Do you know enough?”
2018 Sensitization cum training programme on examination of survivors in sexual assault cases of POCSO on 29/08/2018
2019 Department received LOP for starting the postgraduate course in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology for three students from National Medical Council.
2022 A one-day training programme was held for the district court judges, which included lectures and autopsy demonstration.

  • Inauguration Ceremony of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology in the New College Building
  • The Department of Forensic Medicine Toxicology organized a state-level conference under the aegis of Medico-Legal Association of Maharashtra – FORENSICON on 28 th and 29th October 2023 at the Auditorium in HBTMC DR. RNCH along with State Level Undergraduate Quiz Competition – FORENSIQUEST
2024
  • An Induction training was conducted for the Civil Judges and First Class Judicial Magistrates regarding medicolegal cases and medicolegal autopsy.
  • The renovated Cooper Postmortem Centre was inaugurated and a Medicolegal training programme was organized for the medical officers with regards to documentation of medicolegal reports, collection of samples, etc, celebrating the occasion of the National Forensic Day 2024.
  • An interactive training programme was held under the theme of “ POCSO Act: Role of Hospitals and Health Care Sector” on the occasion of BMC Foundation Day 2024 in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

  • Dr. Shashank Singh was awarded First Prize for Paper Presentation in the Intercollegiate academic fest Qriosity 2025.
  • An Undergraduate Poster competition was organized on the theme Sexual Assault and POCSO Act: Current Issues and Redressal Mechanism on account of Forensic Medicine Day 2025
