Hospital
History and Development
The hospital started as a Maternity Home in 1969 and was upgraded to a General Hospital in 1970. Since 1977, it has been recognised as a teaching hospital affiliated with KEM Hospital.
A Trauma Unit, ICU and ICCU were started in 1982 in a separate Casualty Building, along with a Central Ambulance Service.
As the old hospital building became dilapidated in 1997, the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics was shifted to Oshiwara Maternity Home, the Psychiatry Department was shifted to V. N. Desai Hospital, Santacruz, and the other departments were accommodated within Cooper Hospital.
In 2003, it was proposed to redevelop Cooper Hospital through private-party participation. However, in 2006, MCGM decided to undertake the redevelopment independently.
Accordingly, the redevelopment work commenced in 2009. The newly redeveloped Cooper Hospital was inaugurated on 30 November 2013.
