The Department of Pharmacology is committed to imparting knowledge in the fundamentals of Pharmacology and the rational use of drugs in clinical practice. The department teaches the second year undergraduate (MBBS) students as per NMC’s CBME curriculum. We also have MD Pharmacology seats where every year 6 students are registered. The department actively contributes to patient safety through pharmacovigilance, evidence-based therapeutics, and collaborative research with other clinical departments.

The department of Pharmacology hosts and coordinates the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC), providing support for its periodic meetings and ensuring ethical oversight of all research involving human participants at the institute, to empower the students and faculty to be a part of the various research activities being conducted.

Periodic sensitization sessions on ICH-GCP guidelines and ethical clinical research, conducted for faculty, postgraduate students, and staff involved in research and clinical trials at our institute.

We also support allied health education and maintain active academic collaborations with pharmacy colleges, by hosting a structured internship program for pharmacy students and conducting sensitization activities for nursing and paramedical staff.

The Department of Pharmacology at HBTMC, is a recognized Adverse drug monitoring centre (AMC) which is actively involved in reporting Adverse drug reactions (ADR) from within the institute and surrounding hospitals.

Our vision is to build a strong foundation in pharmacological education, rational therapeutics, and translational research, to nurture physicians who practise safe, evidence-based, and rational use of medicines for the benefit of patients and society.

Mission

• To impart competency-based education in Pharmacology, integrating core pharmacological principles with clinical therapeutics.
• To train undergraduate and postgraduate students in rational prescribing, drug-safety monitoring, and evidence-based medicine.
• To foster a culture of scientific inquiry through active participation in ethically conducted research and innovation.
• To strengthen pharmacovigilance awareness among students, faculty, nursing staff, and the wider healthcare team.
• To collaborate with clinical departments and pharmacy institutions in interdisciplinary teaching, training, and research.
• To conduct continuing medical education (CME), and community-oriented drug-safety programs.

Postgraduate Teaching Learning Activites

Journal Club

Conducted weekly for postgraduate students to critically appraise recently published research articles under faculty guidance, strengthening skills in study-design evaluation, biostatistics, and evidence interpretation.

This empowers them to carefully analyse medical literature either in field of academic research or in the world of pharmaceutical industry.

Departmental Seminars

Postgraduate students present in-depth seminars on core and advanced topics in pharmacology, followed by faculty-led discussions which build subject depth, along with scientific presentation skills.

A consistent practice, with the guidance of peers and the professors, helps to build subject mastery, confidence and improve presentation skills, further preparing students to teach, defend their work at conferences, and communicate complex pharmacology with ease.

Therapeutic Problems / Case Based Discusions

Case-based prescription and therapeutic-decision exercises that bridge classroom pharmacology with real-world clinical practice, covering drug selection, dosing, interactions, and monitoring parameters for common clinical scenarios are conducted which hone their ability to translate pharmacological theory into real clinical decisions like choosing the right drug, adjusting doses for individual patients, anticipating the drug interactions. This is the exact skill set MD Pharmacology students carry forward into prescribing, patient counselling, and clinical consultations throughout their careers.

Industrial internship program for MD Pharmacology students.

Junior residents undergo a 2 month structured industrial internship with recognised pharmaceutical companies, gaining exposure to drug development, clinical research operations, regulatory affairs, and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The program is designed to bridge academic pharmacology with real-world industry practice, building skills relevant to pharmaceutical R&D, medical affairs, and industry-academia collaboration.

With this experience, students gain something far more than just knowledge. It is a stepping stone toward understanding the pharmaceutical industry from the inside. This opens doors to career paths for various roles in Pharmaceutical industry and develop professional relationships that aid them for their future growth and development.

Internship program for pharmacy students.

A structured, one-month internship offered to B.Pharm / M.Pharm students, providing hands-on exposure to hospital drug-use practices, adverse drug reaction (ADR) documentation, and pharmacovigilance reporting under faculty mentorship.

Pharmacovigilance (PvPI) week celebration.

The department organises an annual sensitization program in September, in line with the national Pharmacovigilance Programme of India for medical, nursing, and pharmacy students and hospital staff — including awareness talks, quizzes, poster/case-report competitions, and drives to encourage ADR reporting.

Hands-on pharmacovigilance work imparts the vigilance and reporting discipline dedicated to patient safety, directly preparing students for roles in clinical practice, drug safety, and pharmaceutical regulatory affairs.

Good Clinical Practice Training

Simulation Based Experimental/ Clinical Pharmacology Activities

The department conducts simulation-based experimental pharmacology practicals for the students, using validated computer software and virtual laboratory modules. These simulations facilitate students to study various pharmacological aspects like dose-response relationships, bioassays, isolated tissue preparations, and drug-receptor interactions.

Students are trained to develop skills in drug administration by various routes by performing them on manikins.
